The Budding Tree At Nashua Street

Song of Solomon 2:11-12 – “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.”

It caught the eye while walking toward Nashua Street—a single tree, its branches tipped with the unmistakable green of new buds. Just days before, that same tree had stood stark and dormant, giving no visible sign of the life within. Now, responding to lengthening days and warming temperatures, it declared what the calendar already confirmed: the season had changed.

Nature’s transitions rarely happen overnight. Winter doesn’t surrender to spring in a single dramatic moment. Rather, the change announces itself in small signs—a budding tree here, a returning bird there, gradually accumulating evidence that the world is being made new.

In Scripture, seasons serve as powerful metaphors for spiritual reality. The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us that “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Spiritual life, like nature, moves through distinct seasons—periods of dormancy and growth, waiting and flourishing, pruning and fruitfulness.

The budding tree reveals a profound truth: what appears lifeless may simply be gathering strength for the next expression of vitality. During winter, trees aren’t dead but engaged in essential, invisible processes. They’re drawing nutrients from deep roots, conserving energy, and preparing for the precise moment when conditions are right for growth. The seeming inactivity masks intensive preparation.

How often believers experience similar seasons! Times when prayers seem unanswered, growth appears stalled, and God’s work feels suspended. Yet beneath the surface, essential development continues. The Psalmist understood this when he wrote, “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs” (Psalm 84:5-6).

Even in valleys—low seasons—springs of renewal are forming.

Today’s Prayer: God, thank You for the hope embedded in changing seasons. When I experience spiritual winter, give me patience to wait for the buds of new growth. Amen

Reflection Question: What “budding” sign of a new spiritual season is God showing you right now?
