The Cost Of Convenience

Matthew 7:13-14 – “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

The express checkout lane promises speed and efficiency—scan your items, tap your card, skip the interaction, and you’re out the door in minutes. It’s frictionless, effortless, requiring almost nothing from you. Meanwhile, the traditional checkout demands more: unloading items onto a belt, engaging with a cashier, bagging your purchases. One path offers convenience; the other requires modest effort. Most days, we choose convenience.

This preference for the path of least resistance extends far beyond grocery shopping. We gravitate toward relationships that don’t challenge us, careers that don’t stretch us, entertainment that doesn’t make us think. When spiritual practices require discipline, we substitute easier alternatives. When obedience demands sacrifice, we negotiate for more comfortable options.

Jesus warned against this tendency with stark clarity. Two gates stand before us—one wide and accommodating, the other narrow and restrictive. The wide gate requires little: cultural Christianity without commitment, belief without transformation, association without allegiance. It’s spiritual convenience, faith that costs nothing and changes nothing.

The narrow gate demands everything. It requires denying ourselves, taking up our cross daily, and following Christ regardless of cost (Luke 9:23). It means loving enemies, forgiving debts, serving sacrificially. It’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, costly.

Yet Jesus insists the convenient path leads to destruction while the difficult path leads to life. The express lane isn’t always the best lane. Sometimes the checkout that requires more from us delivers what we truly need. The narrow gate isn’t narrow because God enjoys making things difficult—it’s narrow because transformation requires more than convenience can provide.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me courage to choose the narrow gate even when the wide gate offers more convenience. Amen.

Reflection Question: What convenient spiritual shortcut are you taking that God might be asking you to abandon?
