The Danger Of Secrecy

John 3:20-21 – “For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

The basement smells of damp and neglect. Behind the water heater, hidden from view, a slow leak has been feeding a patch of black mold for months. It started small—barely noticeable—but in the darkness and moisture, it spread across the wall, into the insulation, threading through places no one could see. By the time the homeowner discovers it, the damage requires tearing out entire sections of wall. What could have been fixed easily in the light became destructive in the dark.

Secrets work the same way. In the shadows, hidden from view, they grow and spread. What begins as a small compromise, when wrapped in secrecy, can develop into a destructive force that threatens our spiritual lives.

This principle appears throughout Scripture. David’s affair with Bathsheba began with a secret glance and escalated to murder as he tried to cover his tracks. Achan’s hidden plunder brought defeat to an entire nation. Ananias and Sapphira’s secret agreement led to sudden judgment. In each case, what remained concealed became increasingly dangerous.

Sin craves secrecy because exposure neutralizes its power. James instructs believers to “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:16). This healing comes through bringing what’s hidden into light. The secret sin loses its grip when exposed to truth, accountability, and grace.

John wrote that “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Walking in light isn’t just about moral behavior; it’s about transparency—living openly before God and trusted others, refusing to give darkness any place to take root.

Today’s Prayer: Father, show me where I’ve allowed secrecy to take root and give me courage to bring hidden things into Your light. Amen.

Reflection Question: What area of your life are you keeping in darkness?
