The Dashboard Warning
Proverbs 4:23 – “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
The dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree—check engine light, oil pressure warning, tire pressure indicator all glowing at once. He’d been ignoring the subtle signs for weeks. The slight hesitation when accelerating. The faint grinding sound. The dashboard had been trying to tell him something was wrong, but he’d convinced himself it could wait until next month, after the busy season, when he had more time.
We treat the warning signs in our spiritual lives with similar neglect. The dashboard of our souls displays indicators we’ve learned to ignore. Increasing irritability signals something needs attention, but we blame stress. Growing distance from God flashes a warning, but we promise we’ll get back to consistent prayer soon. Persistent temptation that’s gaining ground illuminates a caution light, but we convince ourselves we’ve got it under control.
The gauges don’t lie. When the oil pressure drops, denying it doesn’t change the reality that the engine is being damaged. When the check engine light appears, covering it with tape doesn’t fix the underlying problem. The warning exists to prompt action before minor issues become major failures.
David understood this principle when he prayed, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me” (Psalm 139:23-24). He invited divine inspection of his internal dashboard, asking God to reveal what needed attention before it caused catastrophic failure.
The dashboard warnings in our lives—whether relational friction, spiritual emptiness, moral compromise, or emotional exhaustion—aren’t meant to condemn but to alert. They’re grace extended, opportunities to address problems while they’re still manageable. Ignoring them doesn’t make them go away. It just guarantees we’ll eventually break down.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me pay attention to the warning signs in my spiritual life rather than ignoring them until crisis hits. Amen.
Reflection Question: What warning light on your spiritual dashboard have you been ignoring?
