The Evacuation Route

1 Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

Cities don’t post evacuation routes after a disaster hits. The signs go up long before any emergency — painted on roads, mounted on poles, quietly marking the way out before anyone needs them. Emergency management officials spend months planning those routes, mapping traffic flow, identifying bottlenecks, and making sure the signs are visible from a distance. The planning happens in advance because when a crisis arrives, there’s no time to figure out the route. You need to already know where the signs are.

Most people drive past those signs hundreds of times without giving them a second thought. They blend into the background of ordinary life — just more signage on an already cluttered street. But ask someone navigating a mandatory evacuation what those signs mean to them, and the answer is completely different. In that moment, those arrows aren’t background noise. They’re the difference between panic and direction.

What’s striking is that the route was always there. Nothing changed about the signs during the storm. What changed was how desperately the driver needed them.

Psalm 32:8 carries a remarkable promise — God will instruct us, teach us the way we should go, and guide us with His eye upon us. But that kind of guidance isn’t something we access on demand in the middle of a crisis. It’s built through consistent time in Scripture, in prayer, and in community during the seasons when nothing feels urgent and everything seems routine.

Those habits aren’t just good spiritual practice. They’re how we learn to read the signs before our lives depend on it.

Today’s Prayer: Father, thank You for marking the way out long before trouble arrives. Help me stay close enough to You that I recognize Your guidance when it matters most. Amen.

Reflection Question: Are you investing in your relationship with God during the calm seasons so that you’ll know which way to turn when a crisis arrives?
