The Expiration Date

1 Peter 1:24-25 – “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

Almost everything in the refrigerator carries a quiet warning printed somewhere on the packaging. Milk, eggs, deli meat, even the seemingly indestructible jar of mayonnaise — all of it eventually crosses a line where what was once safe and nourishing becomes something to throw away instead. The expiration date isn’t arbitrary. It exists because these things are perishable by nature. They were never designed to last indefinitely, and pretending otherwise doesn’t change the chemistry happening inside the container. At some point, what once sustained you can actually make you sick.

It’s a strange but useful exercise to think about how many things in life operate the same way without a printed date to warn us. Trends expire. Popularity expires. Most achievements have a shelf life that’s shorter than people expect, and the validation that comes from them fades faster than anyone wants to admit. Even relationships built on convenience or circumstance often carry an unspoken expiration nobody wants to acknowledge until it arrives.

God’s promises are categorically different, and the difference isn’t a matter of degree. It’s a matter of nature. Peter doesn’t say God’s word lasts a long time. He says it endures forever, drawing a direct contrast with grass and flowers — living things that flourish briefly and then wither, the way everything perishable eventually does. Isaiah 40:8 makes the identical claim centuries earlier, almost word for word, because this isn’t a passing thought. It’s a settled truth meant to be returned to.

What God spoke generations ago is exactly as reliable today as the moment He said it. Nothing about His word is approaching an expiration date, because nothing about its nature was ever perishable to begin with.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, help me to build my life on what truly endures, rather than on things that were never meant to last. Amen.

Reflection Question:
What have you been building your hope or security on that is actually perishable?
