The Filling Station
Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
The weathered sign read “Filling Station” in faded letters—a reminder of simpler times when the purpose was clear and the terminology honest. Early motorists understood that cars needed regular refueling, and entrepreneurs positioned these stations along major routes because the need was constant and predictable. No matter how carefully you drove or how efficient your engine, the tank would eventually run empty.
This straightforward thinking reveals something important about human nature that we often ignore. Just as cars consume fuel with every mile traveled, our souls expend spiritual energy with every challenge faced, every decision made, every relationship navigated. The Christian journey isn’t a one-time fill-up that lasts forever—it’s an ongoing process requiring regular spiritual refueling.
Yet many believers live as though their initial conversion provides permanent fuel for life’s entire journey. They wonder why enthusiasm wanes, why prayer feels difficult, why serving others becomes burdensome. The answer is often simple: they’re running on empty.
Jesus understood this need. He regularly withdrew to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16), modeling the rhythm of expenditure and renewal. He invited weary followers to “come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
God has positioned filling stations throughout our journey—daily prayer, Scripture reading, worship, fellowship with other believers, moments of solitude and reflection. These aren’t optional extras for super-spiritual people; they’re necessary stops for anyone serious about reaching their destination.
We all need refueling—will we pull over when the gauge runs low?
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me recognize when my spiritual tank is running low. Give me humility to admit my need for regular renewal. Amen.
Reflection Question: What “filling station” in your spiritual life have you been neglecting?
