The Football Coach
2 Peter 1:3 – “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”
The head coach paced the sideline with his headset pressed against one ear and a laminated play sheet in his hand. All week he had drilled his team on film, footwork, and assignments until every player knew his role. Now it was the fourth quarter, the score was tied, and he signaled in the next play. Yet once the ball was snapped, his part was over. He could not block the linebacker, catch the pass, or lend his tired running back fresh legs. All he could do was stand at the edge of the field and watch whether his preparation would hold.
Many people think of God in the same way, as a wise coach who hands out good instructions and then waits on the sideline to see how things turn out. Scripture paints a far greater picture. Peter wrote that God’s divine power has given believers everything they need for a godly life. The Lord does prepare His people through His Word, and He does call the plays through His Spirit. He also supplies the strength to carry them out.
Paul understood this when he wrote that God gives the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ. The victory over sin and death was already won at the cross and the empty tomb. Believers step onto the field with a win that has been secured in advance.
No earthly coach can step inside a player and give him what he lacks. God dwells within His people by His Spirit, supplying courage for the hard moment, wisdom for the next decision, and endurance for the final stretch. He prepares His children, stays with them through every play, and gives them all they need to win.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving me everything I need to live for You and win. Amen.
Reflection Question: Where have you been relying only on God’s instructions without depending on His strength?
