The Foundation
Matthew 7:24 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
The construction crew had been working on the site for weeks before any visible progress appeared above ground. To passersby, it seemed like nothing was happening—just workers moving earth, pouring concrete, and reinforcing steel in a massive hole. But the foreman knew better. “We’re building the foundation,” he explained. “Everything else depends on getting this right.”
The Christian life operates on the same principle. New believers often want immediate visible results—dramatic answered prayers, instant character transformation, or rapid spiritual growth. But God knows that lasting spiritual life requires a solid foundation that takes time to establish.
Jesus made this clear in His parable about building on rock versus sand. The difference between the two houses wasn’t visible until the storm came. Both looked fine in fair weather, but only the one with proper foundation survived the testing.
Building a spiritual foundation means investing time in practices that don’t always feel exciting. Daily Bible reading when you’d rather sleep. Prayer when it feels like talking to the ceiling. Church attendance when you’re tired. Obedience when it’s inconvenient. These aren’t glamorous activities, but they create stability for everything else God wants to build in your life.
The construction crew understood that shortcuts in foundation work lead to catastrophic failure later. The same is true spiritually. What we invest in foundational work today determines whether we’ll stand firm when storms come tomorrow.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me patience to build a strong spiritual foundation in my life. Help me value the unseen work that prepares me for your service. Amen.
Reflection Question: What foundational spiritual practice have you been neglecting?
