The Garden Hose
John 7:38 – “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
A kinked garden hose looks completely connected from one end to the other, attached to the spigot on one end and stretched out toward the flowerbed on the other, and yet nothing comes out the nozzle no matter how far the handle is turned. The problem is never the water supply. It is somewhere in the middle, a sharp bend in the hose itself, cutting off flow that was fully available the entire time. Straighten that one kink, and water that had been sitting pressurized and ready suddenly rushes out exactly the way it was supposed to the whole time.
Jesus told a crowd that whoever believed in Him would have rivers of living water flowing out from within them, a supply meant to move freely rather than sit stagnant, and that image only makes sense if the water was never the actual problem to begin with. A believer who feels spiritually dry almost never has a supply problem. The source does not run low the way a well runs low. More often, something along the way has folded in on itself without much notice, unconfessed bitterness held onto quietly, a habit of prayerlessness that crept in gradually, a grudge that felt justified enough not to examine. None of those announce themselves the way a running out would. They simply bend the line a little further each time until the flow that was always available stops reaching anywhere it was meant to go.
Finding the kink takes more honesty than checking the spigot does. It means walking the length of the hose instead of assuming the water ran out, tracing the line back until the actual bend is found rather than the more comfortable explanation. But a kink, once found, is rarely permanent. It straightens the moment it is actually addressed, and the water that had been building the whole time moves again like it never stopped.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, show me where the flow of Your Spirit has been kinked in my life. Give me the honesty to trace the line back and straighten what needs straightening. Amen.
Reflection Question: What might be kinking the flow of God’s Spirit in your life right now?
