The Highlighter

Isaiah 43:1 – “I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

The textbook was full of information, page after page of dense paragraphs that all looked equally important at first glance. But a few lines here and there had been marked in bright yellow, sentences that stood out from everything surrounding them the moment you opened to that page. Nothing about the ink itself made those sentences more true than the rest of the text. The highlighter did not add meaning that was not already there. It simply drew attention to what already mattered most, separating the essential from the surrounding noise so a tired mind studying late at night would not have to sort through every paragraph again from scratch.

That is really all a highlighter does. It does not change the content. It marks it, sets it apart, makes it impossible to skim past without noticing. Anyone flipping through those pages years later would go straight to the yellow lines first, trusting that whoever marked them had already done the work of separating what counted from what did not.

God works that way in a life. He has a habit of marking certain moments, certain people, certain seasons in a way that makes them impossible to miss later, even when they did not feel especially significant while they were happening. A conversation that stuck for no clear reason. A verse that suddenly applied directly to a struggle nobody else knew about. A stranger who showed up at exactly the right time. Isaiah wrote that God summons His people by name, setting them apart as His own, and that kind of attention does not require an explanation to be real.

Looking back over a life eventually reveals the highlighted parts. God was there marking them the entire time.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for paying attention to me long before I noticed You were there. Amen.

Reflection Question: What moment in your life do you now recognize as something God had clearly highlighted?
