The Last Day
Psalm 90:12 – “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
The final page of the desk calendar gets torn away, joining the other 364 sheets in the recycling bin. January 31st—the last day of the first month. Tomorrow brings February 1st and a fresh start, but today marks an ending. Twelve months reduced to twelve crumpled pages. A whole year, gone.
Endings have a way of making us reflective. The last day of a month, a year, a job, a season—these thresholds force us to look back and assess. Did we use the time well? Did we grow? Did we matter? The finality creates urgency we rarely feel on ordinary days.
Moses understood this when he prayed for God to teach us to “number our days.” He wasn’t asking for mathematical ability—he was requesting wisdom to live with an awareness that our days are finite. Every sunset is one less. Every month that ends is gone forever. This isn’t meant to depress us but to awaken us.
Jesus lived with this awareness. He spoke of finishing the work the Father gave Him, of His appointed time, of completing what He came to do. This urgency shaped His priorities—He had no time for trivial pursuits or pointless distractions. Every day mattered because every day was limited.
As we close this month, the question isn’t whether we used every day perfectly. The question is whether we’re living with intention or simply letting days slip past unmarked and unmourned. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Next month might not come. Today—this last day of January—is the only day we actually have. Wisdom means living like we know it.
Today’s Prayer: Father, teach me to number my days so I live with wisdom and intention. Amen.
Reflection Question: If you knew this month was your last, what would you have done differently?
