The Manicured Lawn

Psalm 139:23-24 – “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

There’s a house in the neighborhood that stops you every time you pass it. The lawn is immaculate — deep green, edged with surgical precision, not a dandelion or stray blade of grass anywhere in sight. You find yourself slowing down just to take it in. It’s the kind of lawn that doesn’t happen by accident, and everyone who sees it knows it. Somewhere behind those walls is a homeowner who goes out regularly, walks the property, and deals with whatever doesn’t belong before it has a chance to spread.

That kind of lawn requires a commitment most people aren’t willing to make. It’s not a once-a-season project. It’s a consistent, ongoing discipline — looking closely at what’s growing, catching problems early, and staying ahead of what the soil will naturally produce if left alone.

The soul works the same way. Sin rarely announces itself with a dramatic entrance. It starts small — a compromised attitude, a lingering resentment, a habit that seems harmless at first. Left unexamined, it spreads quietly until the damage is far more difficult to address than it would have been at the start.

David understood this. In Psalm 139, he didn’t wait for obvious spiritual decline before inviting God’s examination. He made it a regular practice — asking God to search him, test him, and point out anything that didn’t belong. That kind of honest, ongoing self-examination isn’t a sign of weakness. According to Proverbs 4:23, it’s precisely how we guard what matters most.

The homeowner with the perfect lawn isn’t out there because the weeds have already taken over. He’s out there to make sure they never get the chance.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to invite Your examination into my life regularly, not just when things have already gone wrong. Amen.
