The Railing

Isaiah 40:29 – “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

The stairwell at work was quiet by the end of the day, most of the building already emptied out. Legs heavy after hours on their feet, hand finding the railing without much thought, the kind of grip that happens automatically after a long shift. Some real weight leaned into that railing going down those last few steps, more than usual, more than most days. The railing did not complain about the extra weight. It did not wobble or give an inch. It simply held, the way it was built to hold, whether the hand gripping it belonged to someone fresh at nine in the morning or someone running on fumes at six that evening.

A railing does not ask what kind of day a person has had before deciding whether to support them. It is fixed, unmoving, anchored into the wall for exactly this purpose, ready for the tired grip as much as the steady one. Nobody thinks twice about leaning on it either. That is simply what it is there for.

Isaiah wrote that God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak, to those who have nothing left to offer and know it. That kind of support does not require a person to arrive strong. It exists precisely for the moments when strength runs out, when legs feel heavy and grip feels weak and the only thing left to do is lean into something steady enough to hold.

A railing can only carry a person down one flight of stairs. Christ carries the weight of an entire life, and He never once grows tired of holding it.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when my strength fails, remind me that You are steady enough to lean on. Amen.

Reflection Question: What are you currently trying to carry on your own strength that you need to lean into Christ for instead?
