The Rearview Mirror

Philippians 3:13-14 – “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal.”

The rearview mirror in every car is intentionally small—just large enough to see what’s behind without dominating your field of vision. Meanwhile, the windshield stretches wide, offering an expansive view of the road ahead. This design choice reflects an important principle: where you’re going matters more than where you’ve been.

Yet many people drive through life with their attention reversed, constantly focused on the past while barely glancing at what lies ahead. They replay old mistakes, rehearse past hurts, or reminisce about “better days” until the rearview mirror becomes their primary view and the windshield grows foggy from neglect.

Paul understood the danger of this backward focus. Despite his impressive credentials and dramatic conversion story, he deliberately chose to forget what was behind and press toward what lay ahead. This didn’t mean erasing his memory or pretending the past never happened. It meant refusing to let yesterday define or limit today.

The past serves a purpose—it teaches us, shapes us, and reminds us how far God has brought us. But it becomes destructive when it dominates our vision and prevents us from moving forward. Past failures can paralyze us with shame. Past successes can trap us in nostalgia. Either way, we’re stuck.

God’s mercies are new every morning, which means His plans for us are forward-focused. What’s in your rearview mirror doesn’t have to determine where you’re headed.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me keep my eyes on the road ahead rather than constantly looking backward. Give me wisdom to learn from the past without being imprisoned by it. Amen.

Reflection Question: What past experience has been dominating your rearview mirror and preventing you from fully engaging with God’s plans for your future?
