The Remnants Of My Father

Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Walking through the yard recently, something stopped you in your tracks. The flowers your father planted were in bloom — colors arranged the way he liked them, in the spots he chose, tended by hands that aren’t there anymore to tend them. And standing there looking at them, a thought settled in quietly. One day he’ll be gone. But these will still be here. Long after he’s left this earth, something he put here with his own hands will still be showing up every spring, still reflecting something about who he was and what he cared about.

There’s a particular kind of emotion that comes with that realization — gratitude and grief arriving at the same time, the way they often do when love is involved.

But the thought doesn’t stop there. Because if a man can leave remnants of himself in a yard full of flowers, how much more has God left of Himself in a world He spoke into existence?

Romans 1:20 makes a remarkable claim — that God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen through what He has made. Every sunrise that stops you mid-step. Every mountain range that makes conversation feel unnecessary. Every flower that blooms on schedule without anyone reminding it to. These aren’t accidents of nature. They are remnants of a Creator who left evidence of Himself everywhere, for anyone paying close enough attention to see it.

Your father’s flowers will bloom again next year. And the God who made every flower will still be leaving fingerprints all over His creation.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me never to become so familiar with Your creation that I stop seeing Your fingerprints on it. Amen.

Reflection Question: Where in the world around you have you been too busy or too distracted to notice the remnants God has left of Himself?
