The Signed Bottle
Joshua 4:20 – “And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.”
Somewhere in a display case or on a shelf in someone’s office there is a champagne bottle with signatures on it that most people walking past would not be able to identify. But the person who owns that bottle does not need anyone else to recognize the names. They know exactly who signed it, exactly what had just happened when the marker was passed around, and exactly what the room felt like in that moment. The bottle itself is ordinary glass. What makes it worth keeping is what it represents, a specific moment when something was accomplished that had required everything the people in that room had to give, and the signatures are the record that those people were there when it happened.
That bottle is not nostalgia for its own sake. It is evidence. It sits on the shelf as a tangible reminder that the thing actually happened, that the effort was real, that the celebration was earned. On the days when the current season is hard and the next victory feels distant, a person can look at that bottle and remember that they have been in a room like that before. The signature does not change. The moment it represents does not diminish. It simply waits on the shelf to be remembered when it is needed most.
God has always understood the human need for that kind of remembrance. When Israel crossed the Jordan, He did not simply let the moment pass. He instructed Joshua to pull twelve stones from the riverbed and stack them as a memorial so that when future generations asked what the stones meant, there would be an answer ready. The stones were signed bottles. They were God’s way of saying this moment was real, and you are not allowed to forget it.
Every believer has stones of their own, moments where God showed up in ways that cannot be explained by anything else. The question is whether we have kept them on the shelf where they can still speak to us, or whether we have let them get buried under everything that came after.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for the moments You have given me that cannot be explained away. Help me keep them visible and accessible. Amen.
Reflection Question: What is the moment in your own life where God showed up so clearly that it still be speaks to you?
