The Storage Bin
1 Peter 5:7 – “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
Most people who rent a storage unit do so with the best of intentions. There are things that do not fit in the house anymore, belongings that belong to a chapter that has closed but do not feel ready to be discarded, items that need a temporary home until a decision can be made about what to do with them. So you rent the unit, load everything in, pull the door down, click the lock, and drive away with the reasonable intention of returning to deal with it properly when the time is right.
The time rarely feels right. Months pass, and then a year, and the unit sits with its contents undisturbed while the monthly charge comes out quietly and automatically. The stuff is out of sight, which means it is largely out of mind, and that arrangement is comfortable enough that nobody rushes to disturb it. You are not ignoring it exactly. You are just not dealing with it yet. There is a difference, or at least it feels like there is.
What makes a storage unit different from simply leaving things in a garage is the deliberateness of it. You made a decision, loaded everything up, drove it somewhere, and locked it away. That is not absentmindedness. That is intentional distance. And most of us have done the same thing with things that have no physical weight at all. Unresolved hurt gets locked away with the intention of dealing with it later. Grief that feels too large for the current season gets loaded up and stored until conditions are more manageable. Anger, guilt, fear, all of it fits behind a door that can be pulled down and locked from the outside.
The problem is that a storage unit you never return to is not a solution. It is a delay with a monthly fee. Psalm 55:22 says to cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you. That is an invitation to stop paying to keep your pain at a distance and bring it to the only one who can actually empty the unit.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, You already know what I have been storing instead of surrendering. Give me the courage to open what I have kept locked and bring it honestly before You. Amen.
Reflection Question: What have you been keeping at a distance that God has been waiting for you to bring directly to Him?
