The Sunset

Romans 13:12 – “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”

Walking toward the entrance of Nashua Street Jail, something caught my attention—a spectacular sunset painting the sky in brilliant oranges and purples. Just beyond the imposing concrete and steel structure, beyond the razor wire and security checkpoints, God had placed a masterpiece on display. The contrast was striking: harsh man-made barriers against the soft glow of fading daylight. For those few moments, beauty broke through even in this place designed for confinement.

As the sun’s last rays painted the jail in golden light, the scene carried deeper meaning. Those seasoned saints in our congregation often say with knowing nods, “It’s getting late in the evening and the sun is going down.” They’re not just making small talk about the weather. They’re reminding us of a spiritual reality—that we’re living in the last hours of this present age. Just as the setting sun signals day’s end, the events unfolding around us suggest that Christ’s return draws ever closer.

Standing there, watching daylight surrender to dusk outside a place of confinement, the metaphor deepened. How many within those walls were unaware of the lateness of the hour, both literally and spiritually? How many of us walk freely yet remain equally unaware?

The sunset carries particular meaning for believers who have walked with the Lord through many seasons. They recognize the signs—moral darkness deepening, biblical values fading from cultural prominence. To them, each sunset is a daily occurrence and a visual reminder that “the Judge is standing at the door” (James 5:9).

This perspective changes everything about how we live. When we truly believe it’s getting late in the evening, we speak more boldly about what matters eternally. We forgive more readily, knowing time is short. We cling less tightly to temporal possessions.

Yet unlike natural sunsets that bring darkness, the spiritual sunset we’re experiencing points toward a greater dawn—the moment when Christ will appear and night will be banished forever.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me live with awareness of the lateness of the hour and use whatever time remains to share Your gospel. Amen.

Reflection Question: How would your priorities change if you lived each day believing “it’s getting late in the evening, and the sun is going down”?
