The Weight Of Unforgiveness
Colossians 3:13 – “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
The hiker loads her backpack for the trail—water, snacks, first aid kit, rain gear. But then she adds something else: a large rock from the parking lot. Her hiking partner stares. “Why are you carrying that?” She shrugs. “Someone threw it at my car last year. I’m keeping it to remind me.” Five miles in, her shoulders ache and her pace has slowed to a crawl. The rock that seemed manageable at the start has become unbearable weight.
Unforgiveness works exactly like that rock. We pick it up after someone wounds us, convinced we need to hold onto the offense. Maybe we think remembering the wrong protects us from future hurt. Maybe we believe our bitterness somehow punishes the offender. Maybe we’ve simply carried it so long we’ve forgotten we’re carrying anything at all. But unforgiveness is dead weight—it doesn’t hurt the person who wronged us; it only exhausts the person carrying it.
Jesus understood this when He taught His disciples to forgive “seventy times seven times” (Matthew 18:22). He wasn’t primarily concerned about the offenders receiving grace; He was concerned about His followers being crushed under the weight of accumulated grievances. Peter thought he was being generous by suggesting forgiving someone seven times. Jesus essentially responded, “Stop counting. Just keep releasing the weight.”
Paul’s instruction to the Colossians carries this same wisdom. Forgiveness isn’t optional equipment for the Christian life—it’s essential gear. We forgive not because people deserve it but because we cannot bear the alternative. The weight of unforgiveness will eventually break us.
The beautiful paradox is this: when we finally release the rock we’ve been carrying, we discover how much lighter the journey becomes. Forgiveness isn’t weakness; it’s the courageous choice to stop punishing ourselves for someone else’s wrong.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, show me what unforgiveness I’m still carrying and give me strength to finally release it. Amen.
Reflection Question: What grudge have you been carrying that’s weighing you down more than it’s affecting the person who hurt you?
