The Welcome Mat
Psalm 24:3-4 –“Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart.” — Psalm 24:3-4
Every house on the street seemed to have one, a simple mat laid just outside the front door, worn down in the middle from years of shoes scraping across it before ever stepping inside. Nobody thought twice about using it. Mud from the yard, grass clippings, the grit tracked in from a parking lot, all of it got left behind on that mat instead of carried onto the carpet. The house itself never changed because of it. What changed was what a person brought into it, filtered out before crossing the threshold rather than dealt with afterward.
That small habit says something about how people actually think about their homes. Nobody wants what was picked up outside tracked into the place where they actually live. The mat exists for exactly that reason, a deliberate pause built into the doorway, a moment to leave behind what does not belong inside before going any further.
David asked a pointed question in the Psalms, who may ascend the mountain of the Lord, who may stand in His holy place, and the answer he gave was not about status or background. It was about what a person carried with them into that space, clean hands and a pure heart, nothing picked up elsewhere dragged in uninvited. Coming into God’s presence was never meant to happen carelessly, the way a person might track mud across a clean floor without noticing. It asks for the same pause a welcome mat asks for, an honest look at what is still clinging before stepping any further in.
Most people wipe their feet without even thinking about it anymore. Coming before God deserves at least that much intention.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me clean hands and a pure heart, and help me leave behind what doesn’t belong there. Amen.
Reflection Question: What have you been carrying into your time with God lately?
