The Yesterday Trap
Isaiah 43:18-19 – “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
There’s a particular kind of stuck that doesn’t look like stuck from the outside. The person still shows up, still goes through the motions, still talks about the future. But if you listen closely, everything they’re most alive about happened years ago. The glory days of a former career. A ministry that once flourished but has long since changed. A dream that burned bright in their twenties that they’re still trying to resurrect in their fifties. They’re not living in the present — they’re camping in a season that has already passed.
It’s an easy trap to fall into, and an understandable one. Some seasons of life are genuinely remarkable. The energy was real, the fruit was real, the sense of purpose was real. There’s nothing wrong with honoring what God did in those chapters. The problem comes when honoring the past becomes holding onto it — when the memory of what was begins to crowd out the awareness of what God is doing right now.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that there is a time and a season for everything under heaven. That’s not just a comfort for difficult seasons — it’s also a release for good ones. Seasons are meant to change. The dream that fit perfectly at thirty may not be the dream God has for you at fifty, and mistaking nostalgia for calling can keep a person anchored to a shore they were never meant to stay on.
God is always doing something new. The invitation is to be present enough to notice it.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for the seasons that have passed and what You accomplished in them. Give me the grace to release what was and the eyes to see what You are doing right now. Amen.
Reflection Question: Is there a dream or season from your past that you’ve been holding onto so tightly that it may be keeping you from recognizing what God is doing in the present?
