The Yield Sign

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

At certain intersections and roundabouts, there’s no traffic light telling you when to go and when to stop. Instead, there’s a simple triangular sign with a single instruction — yield. It means that regardless of where you’re headed or how much of a hurry you’re in, someone else has the right of way. Your job in that moment isn’t to assert yourself or calculate whether you can squeeze through. Your job is to wait, watch, and enter only when the way is clear on terms that aren’t yours.

Most drivers understand the rule intellectually. The problem is that in practice, yielding requires something that doesn’t come naturally — the willingness to subordinate your timing to someone else’s. And when you’re confident about where you’re going, that can feel unnecessary. You can see the road. You know your destination. Why wait?

That tension shows up in the spiritual life constantly. We arrive at the intersections of major decisions — a career move, a relationship, a financial commitment — having already assessed the situation and calculated our approach. We’re ready to merge. The problem is that we haven’t checked whether God is already moving through that intersection, and He always has the right of way.

James 4:13-15 is a pointed reminder that our plans, however well-reasoned, are always subject to a will greater than our own. Yielding to God isn’t an admission that we don’t know what we’re doing. It’s an acknowledgment that He can see what we can’t — the traffic coming from directions we haven’t even looked.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, teach me to pause at the intersections of life and trust that Your timing is always better than mine. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there a situation in your life right now where you’ve been moving forward on your own terms instead of yielding to God’s direction?
