Trash In The Corner
Isaiah 44:22 – “I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.”
I noticed it while cleaning my kitchen—how easy it was to sweep the crumbs and dust into a neat pile in the corner rather than complete the job by picking them up with a dustpan. The floor looked better at first glance, certainly, but the trash remained. It was merely relocated, not removed. Out of immediate sight, but still very much present.
This small household shortcut mirrors a spiritual tendency we all share. When confronted with the uncomfortable debris of our lives—unresolved conflicts, hidden sins, painful memories, unhealthy patterns—we often sweep them into the corners of our hearts. Not dealt with, merely displaced. Not removed, just rearranged.
The strategy works temporarily. Life continues with the appearance of order. The surface looks clean. Yet those corners accumulate more and more over time. Eventually, the pile grows too large to ignore, often spilling back into the center of our lives at inopportune moments.
Scripture speaks directly to this tendency. When David tried to sweep his sin with Bathsheba into the corner, the prophet Nathan confronted him: “You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7). When Jonah attempted to sweep God’s call into the corner by fleeing to Tarshish, a violent storm and three days in a fish’s belly reminded him that relocated disobedience is still disobedience.
God invites us to a thoroughness that goes beyond spiritual corner-sweeping. “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed,” James writes (James 5:16). Not partially healed. Not superficially healed. But genuinely, deeply healed through the complete removal of what defiles.
The beautiful paradox of God’s redemption is that while we’re busy sweeping things into corners, God offers to sweep them away entirely. Isaiah captures this divine housekeeping: “You have swept away all my sins like a cloud. Your sins are dispersed like the morning mist.”
Today’s Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I’ve merely swept the trash of my life into corners rather than allowing You to remove it completely. Amen.
Reflection Question: What issue or sin have you swept into the corner of your life rather than dealing with it completely?
