Trusting God

2 Corinthians 5:7 – “We live by faith, not by sight.”

A pilot flying through thick cloud cover loses every visual reference the moment the plane enters the fog. No horizon, no ground, no way to tell up from down just by looking outside the windshield. What makes it dangerous is not the lack of sight itself but what the body does in response. The inner ear can convince a pilot the plane is banking sharply left when it is flying perfectly level, or climbing when it is actually descending. Every instinct screams that something is wrong, even when the plane is behaving exactly as it should.

Pilots are trained for this moment specifically. They are taught to stop trusting what their body is telling them and trust the instruments instead, the altimeter, the artificial horizon, the readings that do not lie no matter how convincing the sensation of falling or tilting might feel. Pilots who ignore their instruments and trust their instincts in that fog have flown level planes straight into the ground, certain the entire time that something else was true.

There is a particular kind of fear that sets in when a person has heard something from God clearly, and then watches the circumstances around them insist the opposite is true. Maybe it was peace about a diagnosis that the test results have not caught up to yet, or a promise about provision that the bank account has not confirmed. It would be so much easier if the fog simply lifted the moment doubt crept in. But that is not usually how it works. The fog stays. The instincts keep screaming. And the only thing left to hold onto is whether the voice you heard was actually His.

Paul told the Corinthians that believers walk by faith and not by sight, and he wrote that from personal experience, not from theory. Faith was never meant to feel like clarity. It was meant to feel like trusting the instrument panel while every nerve in your body insists the plane is going down.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when my circumstances contradict what You have spoken over my life, help me trust Your voice over my own senses. Amen.

Reflection Question: What has God spoken to you that your current circumstances seem to be contradicting?
