Two Fans
1 Corinthians 12:4 – “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.”
t seemed like a reasonable idea at the time. The room felt warm, so the ceiling fan went on. A few minutes later, still not quite cool enough, the floor fan got switched on too, angled to add extra circulation on top of what the ceiling fan was already doing. The logic seemed obvious — two fans should move more air than one. Instead, something strange happened. The room felt less comfortable, not more. The air felt disrupted, almost agitated, currents from each fan crossing and interrupting each other in ways that canceled out whatever benefit either one was providing on its own. Turning the floor fan back off, oddly enough, is what finally made the room comfortable again.
Two good things, running at the same time in the same space, can produce a worse result than either one operating alone — and that’s not a flaw in either fan. Each one works exactly as designed. The problem is purely a matter of timing and positioning.
That same principle shows up constantly in ministry and in relationships. Two genuinely gifted people — both called, both capable, both operating out of good intentions — don’t always function well occupying the same space at the same moment. It’s rarely a matter of one person being wrong or unqualified. More often it’s a matter of two strong currents working against each other simply because nobody paused to ask whether this particular room, in this particular season, actually needed both fans running.
First Corinthians 12 describes a body made up of many distinct parts, each one positioned with purpose, deliberately not duplicated in the same function at the same time. Discernment isn’t always about identifying which gift is better. Sometimes it’s simply recognizing which one the room actually needs running right now — and trusting that the other will have its moment too.
Today’s Prayer:
Lord, give me the discernment to know when my gift is the one needed in a moment, and the humility to step back when someone else’s is. Amen.
Reflection Question:
Is there a situation in your life right now where two good gifts or good intentions may be working against each other simply because of timing?
