Under The Canopy

Psalm 91:1 – “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

The crew arrived early, working in the heat to raise the large white tent before guests started arriving for the outdoor function. Poles went up first, then the canvas stretched taut across the frame, section by section, until the whole structure stood firm against the open sky. By the time the first cars pulled into the lot, there was a wide patch of shade waiting, a place where the sun couldn’t reach and rain, if it came, would run off harmlessly overhead.

What struck me watching them work was how simple the arrangement really was. The tent didn’t change the weather. The sun still blazed. The clouds still threatened rain later that afternoon. The tent didn’t alter any of that. It simply gave people a place to stand where none of it could touch them, as long as they stayed under it.

That’s the part worth noticing. The protection only worked for those who remained beneath the canopy. Someone could wander out past the edge chasing a better view or a breeze, and the moment they did, the sun found them again. The tent never failed. People just stepped out from under what was already covering them.

God offers His people that same kind of covering. He shelters us from things we can’t always see coming, temptation, despair, the slow wear of a hard season. But that shelter isn’t forced on anyone. It has to be stayed under. Abiding in Him, staying close to His Word, remaining in prayer, that’s what keeps us in the shade.

TThe covering is always there, offered freely and without condition. Staying under it is the only part left up to us.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when I’m tempted to wander toward something that looks better in the moment, remind me that Your shelter is where I’m safest. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there an area of your life right now where you’ve wandered out from under God’s protection?
