Unhealthy Appetite

James 1:15 – “Sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”

A doughnut delivers exactly what it promises the moment it is eaten. Sweetness, satisfaction, a small burst of pleasure that makes the whole experience feel entirely worth it. Nothing about that first bite hints at any cost attached to it. The body does not register damage in the moment, only enjoyment, and that immediate reward is precisely what makes the doughnut easy to reach for again the next day, and the day after that, without much thought given to where the pattern actually leads.

The consequences never show up in the moment of eating. They accumulate quietly somewhere else entirely, arteries slowly narrowing, energy levels slowly declining, a body slowly carrying weight it was never designed to carry, none of it obvious on any single day but unmistakable once enough days have passed. By the time the damage becomes visible, it rarely traces back to one doughnut. It traces back to a pattern that felt harmless every single time it was repeated.

Sin operates by that same delay. James wrote that sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death, and that progression matters as much as the outcome itself. Sin rarely announces its cost at the moment it is committed. It offers exactly what it promises in the moment, pleasure, relief, satisfaction, while the actual damage accumulates somewhere unseen, a hardened conscience, a strained relationship, a slow drift from God that nobody notices happening in real time. The temptation was never lying about how good it would feel. It was lying about what feeling good that many times in a row was actually going to cost.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me discernment to see past the immediate pleasure of sin to its true cost. Help me choose what is good for me over what only feels good in the moment. Amen.

Reflection Question: What pattern in your life feels harmless in the moment but may be quietly accumulating a cost you haven’t yet reckoned with?
