Waiting For The Bus

Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.”

Rain came down hard enough that afternoon to send most people running for cover, but under the small roof of the bus stop, a handful of people stood without any real urgency in their posture. Water ran off the edges of the shelter in sheets, wind pushed the rain sideways in gusts strong enough to soak anyone standing too close to the open side, and still nobody paced or checked their phone every few seconds the way people do when they are unsure something is coming. They simply stood there, some scrolling casually, one man reading a folded newspaper, waiting with the kind of calm that only comes from knowing the outcome ahead of time. That confidence was not blind optimism. It was built on something specific, a schedule they trusted and a route they had ridden before, a system reliable enough that today’s storm did not shake what they expected from it.

Isaiah told a weary and discouraged people that those who hope in the Lord would renew their strength, and that promise was not written for people standing in a light drizzle. It was written for a nation that had watched everything familiar collapse, waiting on a God who felt distant while the storm around them showed no sign of letting up. Waiting on Him rarely feels calm the way it looked at that bus stop. It usually feels more like standing in the wind with no shelter at all, wondering if the thing being waited on is actually still coming.

But the confidence Isaiah described was never meant to rest on how the storm felt. It rested on what had already been proven true about the One being waited on, that His faithfulness did not run on a schedule that bad weather could disrupt. A person who has watched God come through before does not need the storm to calm down first in order to keep waiting well. They have already seen enough to know the route has never once been abandoned.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the same confidence in Your faithfulness that people show waiting for something as ordinary as a bus. Help me wait on You without losing hope when the storm feels long. Amen.
