Waiting For The Bus

Psalm 130:5-6 – “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.”

The rain comes down in sheets, turning the bus stop into a miserable outpost. A woman shifts her weight, water pooling around her feet. A businessman holds his briefcase over his head, his suit jacket soaked through. An elderly man simply stands there, rain streaming down his face. Not one of them leaves. Despite the discomfort, despite the storm, they remain—waiting for a bus they cannot yet see but fully believe will arrive.

What sustains them isn’t blind optimism but established trust. They’ve seen this bus come before. They know its route, its reliability. Past experience has taught them that enduring temporary discomfort leads to reaching their destination. And so they wait with a certainty that transcends their present circumstances.

This everyday scene illustrates a profound spiritual truth about hope. Biblical hope isn’t wishful thinking or vague positivity. It’s confident expectation based on God’s proven character. Like those bus-waiters, believers endure present difficulties because they trust in future arrival—the coming of what God has promised.

Abraham “against all hope, believed in hope” (Romans 4:18) because his confidence was in God’s character, not his circumstances. David strengthened himself in the Lord while hiding in caves. Paul and Silas sang hymns in prison. Each understood that the storms of life, however fierce, are temporary conditions on the journey to an assured destination.

The psalmist captured this perfectly: waiting for God with the same certainty that watchmen wait for morning. Not wondering if dawn will come, but knowing it will. Not hoping the bus might arrive, but confident it’s already on its way.

Today’s Prayer: Father, help me wait with confidence even when circumstances are difficult, trusting Your promises when storms rage. Amen.

Reflection Question: What promise from God are you waiting to see fulfilled?
