Waiting For The Midnight Cry

Matthew 25:6 – “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'”

The empty church sanctuary feels different when you’re working alone. Sitting at a desk responding to work emails while “Midnight Cry” plays through the sound system creates an odd juxtaposition—earthly responsibilities continued under the shadow of eternal expectation. The powerful lyrics about the Bridegroom’s return echo off the walls while spreadsheets fill the computer screen.

This moment captures the unique tension of Christian living—we engage fully in daily work while simultaneously maintaining watchful readiness for Christ’s return. Like those ten virgins in Jesus’ parable, we attend to present duties while awaiting the midnight announcement of the Bridegroom’s arrival.

Jesus told His followers to “occupy until I come” (Luke 19:13 KJV)—not abandoning earthly responsibilities but fulfilling them with Kingdom perspective. Paul instructed believers to “work with your hands” (1 Thessalonians 4:11) while also encouraging them to live in light of the Lord’s imminent return.

The image of Christ as Bridegroom appears throughout Scripture. Isaiah rejoices that “as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you” (Isaiah 62:5). John the Baptist called himself the “friend of the bridegroom” who rejoices at His voice (John 3:29).

This wedding imagery culminates in Revelation’s magnificent declaration: “Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7). The midnight cry announces not an ending but a beginning—the commencement of an eternal celebration. Until then, we work faithfully, listen carefully, and wait expectantly.

Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep my heart attuned to Your coming while I attend to daily responsibilities. Amen.

Reflection Question: How does anticipating Christ’s return influence your everyday work?
