Weak Iternet

James 4:8 – “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”

Every house with a wireless router has at least one room where the signal weakens. Walk into the kitchen and the connection is strong, full bars, fast and reliable. Walk down the hall into the back bedroom and suddenly the same network struggles — pages load slowly, video calls freeze, the signal bar drops to one. Nothing changed about the router. It’s still broadcasting exactly as strong as it was in the kitchen. What changed is the distance, and distance has a cost that no amount of wishing the connection were stronger can overcome.

The fix isn’t complicated, even if it’s sometimes inconvenient. Move closer to the source, and the signal returns.

That principle translates directly to the spiritual life. People often describe feeling distant from God, unable to sense His presence or hear His direction clearly, and wonder if something is wrong with the connection itself. But more often than not, the signal hasn’t weakened. The proximity has changed. Busyness, distraction, neglected prayer, and an empty Bible on the nightstand all function like walking further from the router. The voice of God hasn’t gotten quieter. The distance has simply grown.

James 4:8 doesn’t describe a complicated process for restoring that closeness. It describes a direct exchange — draw near, and He draws near in return. Psalm 145:18 adds that the Lord is near to all who call on Him, provided they call in truth, which implies sincerity and proximity together, not just proximity alone.

A weak signal rarely means the source has failed. It usually means it’s time to move closer.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, show me where I have drifted and give me the discipline to move back into Your presence rather than wondering why the signal feels weak. Amen.

Reflection Question:
Where have you drifted from the source lately?
