Weather Forecast
Numbers 23:19 – “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and then not fulfill?”
The forecast on his phone showed a bright yellow sun and a ten percent chance of rain, so the man fired up the grill and invited the neighbors over for burgers. By four o’clock, dark clouds had rolled in from the west, and fifteen minutes later everyone was crowded under the patio umbrella while rain hammered the lawn and dripped off the edge onto the paper plates. The next morning, he checked the forecast again before leaving for work. Meteorologists use satellites, radar, and powerful computer models, and they still miss regularly. Yet people keep trusting them, because a forecast that is right most of the time still feels better than no forecast at all.
God’s track record has no such gaps. Balaam, a prophet hired to curse Israel, found himself declaring instead that God is not a man that He should lie. Whatever God speaks, He does, and whatever He promises, He fulfills.
Israel saw that truth play out over generations. After the people had settled in the land of Canaan, the book of Joshua recorded a remarkable summary. Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel had failed, and every one had been fulfilled. Centuries of history had tested God’s word, and it held up in every detail.
Believers often place more confidence in a weather app than in the promises of God. Yet human predictions carry a margin of error, and God’s word carries none. His promises will stand long after every forecast has come and gone, and the One who has never been wrong deserves a believer’s complete trust.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me trust Your promises more than any prediction this world can offer. Amen.
Reflection Question: Which of God’s promises have you trusted less than you trust a weather forecast?
