What’s Down In The Well Comes Up In The Bucket
Luke 6:45 – “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
The old-fashioned water well operated on a simple principle—the bucket could only retrieve what already existed in the depths below. If the well contained fresh water, the bucket brought up refreshment. If the well was dry, the bucket returned empty. If the water was contaminated, the bucket revealed the hidden pollution.
This rural imagery perfectly illustrates a profound spiritual truth: what emerges from our lives during pressure moments reveals what we’ve been storing in our spiritual depths. Crisis doesn’t create character; it reveals it. Difficulty doesn’t determine our responses; it displays what’s already within us.
Jesus understood this principle when He taught that what comes out of a person’s mouth flows from what fills their heart. The “bucket” of our words and actions can only draw up what already exists in the “well” of our inner life. When pressure comes—when the rope tightens and the bucket descends into our depths—what rises to the surface often surprises even us.
The person who responds to criticism with grace rather than defensiveness reveals a well filled with security in God’s acceptance. The believer who faces loss with hope rather than despair shows a well supplied with eternal perspective. The Christian who offers forgiveness when wounded demonstrates a well replenished by Christ’s own mercy.
The Psalmist recognized the importance of what fills our wells: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). What we store during quiet seasons determines what surfaces during turbulent ones.
Today’s Prayer: Father, examine what’s in the well of my heart today. Fill me with Your Word, Your presence, and Your love, so that when life’s difficulties lower the bucket into my depths, what rises will honor You and bless others. Amen.
Reflection Question: What did your response to a recent difficulty reveal about what’s been collecting in the well of your heart?
