When God Doesn’t Make Sense

Isaiah 55:8 – “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD.”

The words hung heavy in the air, filled with raw pain and confusion. “She was so young, hadn’t even begun to live her life. Why did she have to die when there are so many other people in the world who are worse than her?” His little sister had been riding the bus when the accident happened—a sudden flip that changed everything in an instant.

The question echoed with an ache that every human heart recognizes. Why do innocent children suffer while those who cause harm seem untouched? Why do the gentle die young while the cruel live long? Why does tragedy strike the very people who least deserve it?

These aren’t new questions. Job wrestled with similar confusion after losing his children, his health, and his livelihood. The psalmist cried out, “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever?” (Psalm 13:1). Even Jesus, facing the cross, asked if there might be another way.

Scripture doesn’t promise that we’ll always understand God’s timing or methods. Isaiah reminds us that God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours—not just different, but operating on a level we can’t fully grasp. What looks like tragedy from our limited perspective may serve purposes we cannot see.

This doesn’t minimize the pain or make the questions disappear. Grief is real, and confusion is valid. But it does offer an anchor when nothing else makes sense: God’s character remains trustworthy even when His actions seem incomprehensible.

Sometimes faith isn’t about understanding God’s plan—it’s about trusting God’s heart when the plan is hidden from view.

Today’s Prayer: Father, when life doesn’t make sense and Your ways seem beyond understanding, help me trust You even when I can’t see Your hand. Amen.

Reflection Question: When have you experienced something that didn’t make sense from your perspective?
