Worried About Tomorrow
Matthew 6:34 – “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
There is a particular kind of restlessness that arrives in the evening when tomorrow is carrying something you do not feel ready for. The day is done, the house is quiet, and everything that needs to happen in the next several hours before you have to show up and deliver should make rest possible. Instead the mind keeps moving toward the morning, rehearsing what is not yet prepared, measuring the gap between where things currently stand and where they need to be, and finding that gap wider than is comfortable to sit with. The body is home but the mind is already in the room where the thing has to happen, and it is not going well in there.
What makes that kind of worry particularly draining is that it costs everything and produces nothing. The preparation that did not happen today does not happen during the worry either. The subject that feels thin does not get stronger because you spent three hours in your living room anxious about it. The morning arrives in exactly the same condition it was going to arrive in regardless of how the evening was spent, except now the person who has to show up for it is also tired from a night of carrying what the worry never actually helped.
Jesus addressed this with a directness that does not leave much room for negotiation. Matthew 6:34 is not a suggestion offered to people with naturally calm temperaments. It is an instruction given to anyone who has ever sat in a quiet house and let tomorrow move in uninvited. The provision for tomorrow, the clarity, the steadiness needed to walk into a room and deliver, none of it is available tonight. It is available in the morning, which is precisely when it is needed, and the God who knows what you need before you ask has already accounted for what tomorrow requires of you.
The room will be there in the morning. So will He.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, I release tomorrow into Your hands. Remind me that Your provision for what tomorrow requires does not arrive the night before.Amen.
Reflection Question: What are you carrying today that belongs to tomorrow?
